What is Aesthetics?

In the briefest of words, it is:

(Aesthetics, n.d.) We can break down the term “aesthetics” into two different forms of meaning, Axiology: the study of finding value in philosophy,

Ethics: the study of finding value through human actions in philosophy (60Second Philosophy, 2015).

Once they combine they form a greater meaning, that can be distributed to society in a subjective form or in a general agreement. There is no right or wrong question or answer under the beauty of art but, what is art really?

Art is defined by many people differently, some can say the beauty of the art is what is defined as art, while others have a more post-modernists approach. We can never truly understand art but we can give a "black and white” definition and come to an agreement on this blog-post.

(Art, n.d.)

There are even more definitions of art if we were to organize them in various forms:

(Philosophy Tube, 2017)

So, what does this all mean? What is aesthetic and what is art? How can we have them in our lives and who determines them as aesthetic? Well, just like everyone else, I will be providing some of my thoughts and philosophical ideas on what aesthetic in art really is…

To me, aesthetics means developing an idea of what beauty is, which can come from our childhood, our parents, family members, friends and even from the media. When we invest our time in certain things while we grow up such as, video games, traveling, a piece of art, literature or even the music that we listen to we come across our likes and dislikes, formally helping us adjust our “beauty” or “aesthetic” definition. It is not art in itself that gives us the emotional quality but what that art reminds us off from the very beginning of our time on this planet. For example, I realize my love for patterns, and I disregard or ignore staring at an image for too long that is hard to find patterns in, however, when I do find an image or an art/painting with a certain pattern within me the aesthetic nature and quality is triggered and I enjoy that formation or growth of it.

How does this help me in the future? Well, in any quantity that is presumed to be an “art” should not be considered an art if the aesthetic it should provide does not resonant with you. It is so very misguided that post-modernistic art should have a certain definition, quality or relation to every person that views it, however, this is not the case, and it is fairly natural to disagree with such a informal statement about art and aesthetic.

I have been able to find the topic interesting because discussing it with various people in my life shows how aesthetic can be defined not only in the form of art but also in a universal manner, whether it maybe regarding the cosmos, environmental beauty or landscape, and even people in general. There is a never ending cycle of how we humans like to describe things, if anything, that is how we have evolved and structured to always have the ability to give a certain “beauty” to something or to someone.
